Greed
Short description
Greed follows John McTeague, a former miner who becomes a dentist in San Francisco. He falls in love with Trina, the cousin of his friend Marcus, and the two marry. When Trina wins five thousand dollars in a lottery, the couple's modest life begins to fall apart. Her growing reluctance to part with the money and Marcus's resentment over losing her turn affection into suspicion, and the situation moves toward tragedy. The story is based on Frank Norris's novel McTeague.
Erich von Stroheim directed the film, his second feature after Foolish Wives, and wrote the screenplay with June Mathis. Irving Thalberg produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Gibson Gowland plays McTeague, Zasu Pitts plays Trina, and Jean Hersholt plays Marcus, among a credited cast of twenty-five. The film runs 140 minutes. It is a silent crime drama from the United States.
On IMDb, the film holds 8 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 205 votes. A critics' rating of 9.7 out of 10 from 27 reviews places it well above both audience scores.
