The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

Flynn Carsen has spent his life accumulating academic degrees, and at thirty he still lives with his mother. When he takes a job at the New York Public Library, he discovers that its hidden vaults hold far more than books: the library is a storehouse of humanity's most valuable historical and magical objects, watched over by a secret order of Librarians. Flynn is chosen as the new Librarian, but his tenure begins badly when a fragment of the Spear of Destiny is stolen from the collection. Anyone who possesses the spear gains enormous power, so Flynn sets out to recover it and to locate the remaining pieces before the thieves do. He is joined by Nicole Noone, a bodyguard whose combat skills repeatedly pull him out of danger.

Peter Winther directed this 2004 television adventure, the first entry in a series of Librarian films, from a script by David Titcher. Noah Wyle leads the cast as Flynn, with Sonya Walger as Nicole, Jane Curtin as Charlene, Bob Newhart as Judson, Kyle MacLachlan as Edward Wilde and Lisa Brenner as Debra. The film runs 106 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.3 from about 729 votes — modest, consistent numbers that suggest a receptive but unenthusiastic audience. Winther returned to directing much later with Aftermath, released in 2021.
