What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea for the film was inspired by screenwriter John Dwyer's life story: in 1969, his father bought an old yacht and decided to sail it to Texas with his family, hiring a one-eyed sailor named Ron, who claimed to be an experienced captain but turned out to be a heavy drinker, earning him the nickname Ron Rico after a brand of cheap rum. During the voyage, all the yacht's electronics failed, they got lost, and ran into a storm in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Captain Ron drives two cars in the film. Both are missing a headlight – on the same side as Ron's missing eye.
  • A significant portion of Captain Ron's wardrobe was borrowed from Kurt Russell's own closet. Furthermore, the actor suggested many of Ron's defining characteristics – such as a penchant for wearing swim trunks, a raspy, pirate-like voice, and so on. Russell initially objected to the depiction of drinking, but was told it would be in keeping with his character, and he withdrew his objections.
  • When Kurt Russell was cast in the lead role, there was a plan to have John Carpenter direct. He later recounted that he would have accepted the offer – primarily because of the opportunity to film in the Caribbean.
