The film is based on a historical event, and most of the characters are real historical figures.
Filming took place in England, as well as in South Africa, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
A Zulu army of four thousand was portrayed by only five hundred people.
Due to South African laws during the apartheid era, Zulus could not be paid wages, so the director bought them cows.
The film crew had to be more careful with Zulu girls, as interracial sexual relations were a criminal offense in South Africa.
The film was the first producing project for actor Stanley Baker.
Before this film, Michael Caine had only played minor roles, and in 'Zulu' he was originally supposed to play Private Hook.
The film was released on January 22, 1964, exactly 85 years after the Battle of Rorke's Drift.
