What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a historical event, and most of the characters are real historical figures.
  • Filming took place in England, as well as in South Africa, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • A Zulu army of four thousand was portrayed by only five hundred people.
  • Due to South African laws during the apartheid era, Zulus could not be paid wages, so the director bought them cows.
  • The film crew had to be more careful with Zulu girls, as interracial sexual relations were a criminal offense in South Africa.
  • The film was the first producing project for actor Stanley Baker.
  • Before this film, Michael Caine had only played minor roles, and in 'Zulu' he was originally supposed to play Private Hook.
  • The film was released on January 22, 1964, exactly 85 years after the Battle of Rorke's Drift.
