Gotti is a crime drama about John Gotti, the leader of a small New York mafia crew who breaks the established rules of the Cosa Nostra. After the death of his mentor, he eliminates a potential rival and takes control of the powerful Gambino family, becoming the most publicly visible mob boss in America. His rise brings wealth and influence, but his greed, his willingness to defy the old codes and his high profile draw the attention of federal investigators and prosecutors, setting up the conflict that runs through the film.
The film was directed by Robert Harmon, arriving in the middle of a run of television and feature work that had begun with The Hitcher in 1986 and continued through Nowhere to Run in 1993; several more films followed Gotti, including The Crossing and a series of Jesse Stone entries. It was produced by David Coatsworth for HBO Films, with Armand Assante in the title role and William Forsythe as Sammy Gravano. Anthony Quinn appears as Neil Dellacroce, Frank Vincent and Vincent Pastore play other figures in the organization, and Richard C. Sarafian portrays Paul Castellano.
Released in 1996, the film runs 117 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 9,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from roughly 105 votes, indicating a smaller sample of viewers there.
