This documentary explores the life and career of Dolly Parton, presenting her as a figure who united a divided United States through her music and public persona. The film examines the contrast between her distinct visual image and the complex reality of her personality, highlighting her role as both a business leader and a feminist. It looks at her extensive songwriting history, including the creation of hits later covered by other major artists, and her deep connections to her Appalachian roots.
The film was directed by Nicolas Maupied, following his previous works Sardou, autoportrait and Nicolas Cage: Hollywood's Mad Genius. Produced in France by companies including Canal+, ARTE, Sacem, and Cosmote TV, the 52-minute production features archive footage of Dolly Parton and voice-over narration by Nathalie Labarthe. Olivier de Bannes served as the producer. The documentary was released on May 9, 2025.
