This magical-realist production explores the volatile relationship between Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. In a narrative that mirrors a reversed version of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, Frida returns from the underworld during the Day of the Dead to reunite with Diego. The pair briefly revisits their history of conflict and passion before they depart the land of the living.
The film captures the Metropolitan Opera premiere of the first opera written by American composer Gabriela Lena Frank, who also contributed to the screenplay alongside Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz. Directed by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Deborah Colker, the production features Isabel Leonard as Frida and Carlos Álvarez as Diego. Other cast members include Gabriella Reyes as Catrina, Angel Blue as the Live in HD host, Nils Wanderer as Leonardo, and Lianne Coble-Dispensa as Guadalupe Ponti.
Released on May 30, 2026, the film has a runtime of 158 minutes.
