What's left behind the scenes

  • The director's cut of the film is 168 minutes long. The DVD version has a runtime of 176 minutes. This version includes 35 minutes that were not in the video release.
  • Actress Blythe Danner plays Martha Jefferson, the wife of President Thomas Jefferson, in the film. Two decades later, Danner's daughter, Gwyneth Paltrow, would play the same president’s daughter, Patsy, in “Jefferson in Paris” (1995).
  • The role of John Adams seemed to follow actor William Daniels. In addition to reprising it in the miniseries “The Rebels” (1979), he played Adams’ son, John Quincy Adams, in another miniseries, “The Adams Chronicles” (1976), and Adams’ brother, Samuel, in the television film “Bastard” (1978).
  • The film is based on the 1969 Broadway musical, and many actors from that production also appeared in the film. Incidentally, Peter H. Hunt also directed the musical on Broadway.
  • The film's producer, Jack L. Warner, arranged a private screening for then-US President Richard Nixon. Nixon was offended by the song “Cool Hand Luke,” and at his request, it was cut from the release version. However, the song is included on the DVD release.
