Sweet Movie
Short description
Sweet Movie centers on the winner of a Miss World Virginity contest. She marries a wealthy man, leaves him, and moves through a series of encounters in a world of excess and debauchery. A second thread follows a woman steering a tugboat bearing a large head of Karl Marx, joined by a sailor from the Potemkin.
Dušan Makavejev directed and co-wrote the film with France Gallagher and Martin Malina; Richard Hellman and Vincent Malle produced it. It was Makavejev's second feature, following I Miss Sonia Henie in 1971 and preceding The Coca-Cola Kid in 1985. The cast includes Carole Laure as the contest winner, Pierre Clémenti as the sailor, Anna Prucnal as Captain Anna Planeta, Sami Frey, John Vernon and Jane Mallett. It is a German, Canadian and French co-production and runs 98 minutes.
Made in 1974, the film drew mixed responses. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 6,900 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from about 150 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 20 reviews is close to the audience scores on IMDb, while the much smaller TMDB sample sits lower. It belongs to the satirical comedy of its period, mixing political imagery with sexual farce.
What's left behind the scenes
- Anna Prucnal was a character who emerged directly during filming. The ship's captain was originally intended to be Miss Canada herself, but Carole Lor, who had previously appeared in several explicit scenes, refused to participate in some subsequent sexual scenes and halted filming. A new character, played by Anna Prucnal, was introduced into the film, dividing the plot into two parts.
- For her participation in the film, actress Anna Prucnal was accused of anti-Sovietism and was denied permission to enter her native Poland for 7 years after the film's release, including to attend her mother's funeral.
