Katie Burke is finishing her final year at a prestigious American university, juggling thesis work with interviews for a job at a top consulting firm. Two years earlier her boyfriend, Embry Larkin, vanished from campus without explanation, and she has not moved past it. When detective Wade Handler reopens the case, his questions draw him into Katie's life, and evidence begins to surface that may tie Embry to another disappearance at the school. Katie finds herself caught between what she remembers of Embry and the future she has been working toward.

Stephen Gaghan wrote and directed the film, his first as director; his later features are Syriana, Gold and Dolittle. Katie Holmes plays Katie, with Benjamin Bratt as Handler, Charlie Hunnam as Embry, Zooey Deschanel as Samantha Harper, Fred Ward as Bill Stayton and Mark Feuerstein as Robert Hanson. The production, from Paramount, Touchstone Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, cost about 25 million dollars and returned roughly 11 million worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 111 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 4.8 out of 10 from 188 votes, a small gap between professional and audience assessments that places both toward the low end. The runtime is 99 minutes.
