This documentary examines the life and career of Marvin Gaye, a central figure at the Motown label who rose from a background singer to a major influence on American pop culture. The film explores the contrast between his public success as a musician and his private struggles, including childhood trauma, family disputes, and depression. It highlights how his work blended sensual melodies with social commentary and hope while he navigated a racist society.
Directed and written by Schyda Vasseghi, this is the second film in the director's career, following Pop & Passion and preceding Lady Gaga - My Songs. My Life. The German production was created by ZDF, ARTE, and DOKFILM. The film features archive footage of Marvin Gaye and includes appearances by Dan Dombrowe, Hadnet Tesfai, Jamie Lidell, David Ritz, and Pascale Cousaert.
