In the carefree days before World War I, introverted Austrian author Jules strikes up a friendship with the exuberant Frenchman Jim and both men fall for the impulsive and beautiful Catherine.

- The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel 'Jules and Jim' (Jules et Jim, 1953) by Henri-Pierre Roché.
- Cinematographer Raoul Coutard (1924-2016) used lightweight filming equipment that had never been used before, and even mounted some cameras on bicycles.
- François Truffaut (1932-1984) was so nervous on the night of the premiere that instead of watching his own film, he decided to watch one of the Marx Brothers' movies.
- When the funds allocated for the film's production ran out, Jeanne Moreau invested her own money.
