The Picture of Dorian Gray
Short description
In Victorian London, a wealthy young man named Dorian Gray sits for a portrait painted by his friend Basil Hallward. Encouraged by the cynical Lord Henry Wotton to pursue pleasure above all else, Dorian wishes that the painting would age in his place while he keeps his youth. The wish comes true, and as he drifts into a life of indulgence and cruelty, his appearance never changes, while the portrait bears the marks of his actions. Those close to him, including the singer Sibyl Vane, are harmed along the way, and the true state of the picture becomes a burden he cannot escape.
Albert Lewin wrote and directed this 1945 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel, the first film he directed, followed by Pandora and the Flying Dutchman in 1951. Hurd Hatfield plays Dorian, with George Sanders as Lord Henry Wotton, Angela Lansbury as Sibyl Vane, Donna Reed as Gladys Hallward and Lowell Gilmore as Basil Hallward. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced the 111-minute drama, which also draws on fantasy, horror and thriller elements.
The film holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 16,000 votes and a 7.1 rating on TMDB from roughly 310 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 16 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, indicating steady appreciation across both professional and general viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The famous portrait of Dorian Gray at the age depicted in Ivan Albright's (1897-1983) work, which took about a year to create, is now owned by the Art Institute of Chicago, where the portrait has been on display to visitors for many years. Albright's twin brother, Malvin, a well-known sculptor, also received a commission to create a portrait of Dorian, but of his youth, and his portrait was never used.
