This documentary examines the rise of the French rap artist Jul, who emerged from the working-class districts of Marseille. Using basic equipment in a home studio, he established an independent and highly productive approach to music that challenged traditional entertainment industry standards. The film explores how his specific style and image influenced a broader cultural identity and bridged gaps between different generations, tracing his path from early beginnings to achieving widespread success.
Directed by Anthony Igoulen, this project is the second film in his career following Rhythm + Flow France: After the Beat. The production is a collaboration between France, Belgium, and Switzerland, supported by organizations including France Télévisions, RTBF, CNC, and Sacem. The movie features Zita Hanrot as the narrator and incorporates archive footage of Jul. Running for 90 minutes, the film provides a portrait of an artist who maintained a level of personal invisibility despite filling stadiums and participating in the Olympic torch relay.
