Her Alibi
Short description
Phil Blackwood writes detective novels featuring a sleuth named Peter Swift, but his ideas have dried up, a slump that followed his wife leaving him. Pressured by his agent and looking for material, he starts sitting in on murder trials, where he notices Nina, a Romanian woman accused of killing a man. Smitten, he provides her with an alibi by claiming she was with him, and takes her to stay at his house in Connecticut. His writing picks up again, but the strange accidents occurring around him make him question whether she is as innocent as he first assumed.
Bruce Beresford directed the film, the seventh of the twenty features he has made, arriving between Driving Miss Daisy and Black Robe. Charlie Peters wrote the screenplay, and Keith Barish produced it for Warner Bros. Tom Selleck plays Phil, with Paulina Porizkova as Nina, William Daniels as his friend Sam, and James Farentino as Frank Polito. Tess Harper and Patrick Wayne also appear.
Released in February 1989 and running ninety-four minutes, the comedy drew modest business, taking about 19 million dollars worldwide. Audiences were lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 8,500 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 from about 147. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 24 reviews places it below even those viewer scores.

- There is a moment in the film where Tom Selleck jokes with Paulina Porizkova about her killing a bug by swatting it with a rolled-up Sports Illustrated magazine. In real life, Porizkova gained fame after appearing on the cover of that magazine. She first appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1984 and again in 1985.
- When Phil and Sam are talking at the table during the first show, orange juice is seen sloshing in the glass in one shot, while it remains still in all others.
- Several scenes in this film take place during an event known as the "Grimaldi Funeral." This is a reference to Joseph Grimaldi (1778–1837), who is the most famous English clown in history. As in the film, this ceremony is held annually on the first Sunday in February at All Saints Church in London.
- When Phil picks up the cat and then walks through the kitchen, a boom microphone can be briefly seen to the left of him.
- When Sam is on the phone with Phil, the editor appears in the frame. Phil calls him Hank, but the character's name in the film is Yan, not Hank. This is the actor's real name (Hank DeLuca).
- In the scene where Phil and Sam are sitting in the restaurant, the same couple with a tape recorder appears outside the window twice.
- When the lieutenant arrives at Phil's house, it is night while he is standing at the front door. But as soon as they drive off, it is already daytime outside.
