Barefoot in the Park

Newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter move into a small walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village after their honeymoon. Paul is a conservative young lawyer, while Corie is spontaneous and eager for fun, and the gap between their temperaments soon becomes apparent as they settle into married life. Their building has no elevator, the apartment is cramped, and the weather gets in through a hole in the ceiling. Corie also worries about her mother, Ethel, who is alone, and she becomes friendly with Victor Velasco, an older neighbor from the upper floor who passes through their apartment to reach his own. Corie's attempt to bring Victor and Ethel together leads to complications during an evening out, and the young couple's differences come to a head.

The film is based on Neil Simon's play, with Simon writing the screenplay, and it was directed by Gene Saks. It was the first film Saks directed, followed by The Odd Couple, Cactus Flower, Mame and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda play the couple, with Charles Boyer as Victor, Mildred Natwick as Ethel, Herb Edelman and Mabel Albertson in supporting roles. Made for about 2 million dollars, it took roughly 30 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On TMDB it holds 7.1 out of 10 from 632 votes, and its critics' rating is also 7.1 out of 10 from 54 reviews, so critics and audiences responded to it similarly.
