Love in the Afternoon

Frank Flannagan is a wealthy American businessman with a taste for romance, and Claude Chavasse is the Paris private detective who has made a career of following him on behalf of suspicious husbands. When one client, a Monsieur X, learns that Flannagan has been seeing his wife, he vows to shoot the man. Chavasse's daughter Ariane overhears the threat and decides to warn Flannagan herself, setting in motion a series of meetings between the older playboy and the young woman, who conceals her connection to the detective.

Billy Wilder directed, produced and co-wrote the film with I. A. L. Diamond, the eleventh of the twenty-two features he directed. Gary Cooper plays Flannagan and Audrey Hepburn plays Ariane, with Maurice Chevalier as her father. John McGiver, Van Doude and Lise Bourdin appear in supporting roles.

Released in 1957, the film runs 130 minutes and was made for about two million dollars, a figure its worldwide box office matched. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from some 348 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 28 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
