A young man inherits an old mansion and moves in with his girlfriend, only to find himself drawn into the occult practices that once consumed his father. He discovers a book of rituals and begins experimenting with it, which summons a group of small, malevolent creatures and gradually places him under the influence of dark forces. The film blends horror and comedy as the household descends into supernatural chaos.
Ghoulies marked the feature directing debut of Luca Bercovici, who wrote the screenplay with Jefery Levy; Levy also produced. Peter Liapis plays Jonathan Graves, with Lisa Pelikan as Rebecca, Michael Des Barres as Malcolm Graves, Ralph Seymour as Mark, Victoria Catlin as Anastasia and Keith Joe Dick as Dick. It was made by Empire Pictures on a budget of 6 million dollars and released in November 1984, running 81 minutes.
The film took in roughly 35 million dollars worldwide, a strong return against its cost, with much of that success coming from the home video market, and it went on to spawn sequels. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 303 votes.
