In 490 BC, the Olympic champion Phillipides is put in charge of the guard protecting Athens, and he falls for Andromeda, the daughter of a prominent citizen who is promised to the scheming aristocrat Teocrito. When Persia's King Darius threatens Greece, Phillipides refuses to join Teocrito's plot to hand the city over and instead sets out for Sparta to ask for help, gathering a band of Athenians to face the invaders.
The Italian-French production was directed by Jacques Tourneur, the ninth of the ten features listed for him, arriving after Night of the Demon and The Fearmakers and followed by War-Gods of the Deep. Steve Reeves plays Phillipides, with Mylène Demongeot as Andromeda, Sergio Fantoni as Teocrito, Daniela Rocca as Karis, Philippe Hersent as Callimaco and Alberto Lupo as Milziade. Augusto Frassinetti, Bruno Vailati and Ennio De Concini wrote the screenplay, and Vailati and Lionello Santi produced. The film runs 90 minutes.
Audience scores are modest and based on small samples: on IMDb it holds 5.1/10 from about 1,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.2/10 from 33 votes.
