In the spring of 1941, the German battleship Bismarck breaks out into the North Atlantic, accompanied by the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. Its guns let it strike at convoys while staying out of range of the Royal Navy's own warships, so British shipping faces a serious threat. After the Bismarck sinks a major British warship, Winston Churchill orders the fleet to hunt the ship down and destroy it at any cost, setting off a pursuit across the ocean.
The film centres on Captain Jonathan Shepard, the officer directing operations from the Admiralty in London, and Anne Davis, a WRNS officer working alongside him. Kenneth More and Dana Wynter lead a credited cast of 65 that also includes Laurence Naismith, Geoffrey Keen, Carl Möhner and Karl Stepanek. Edmund H. North wrote the screenplay and John Brabourne produced.
Lewis Gilbert directed. Released in 1960, it was his second film in the chronological list of his work, arriving between The Good Die Young in 1954 and Alfie in 1966, and it preceded the run of larger productions he made later, including You Only Live Twice and Moonraker. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 124 votes.
