The film is based on James Goldman's play "The Lion in Winter" (1966).
The film was shot in France, Wales, and Ireland.

This is not Peter O'Toole's first role as Henry II Plantagenet; he previously played this king in the film 'Becket,' and was nominated for an 'Oscar' for the role both times.
The film was slightly cut for Soviet distribution, and the text of some lines was altered. One of the most notable differences between the Soviet release version and the original is the absence of all hints and phrases related to the possible homosexuality of Richard the Lionheart. Instead, other phrases appropriate to the context of the conversation were inserted into the dialogue, and some shots were cut.
