César is a wealthy young man in Madrid who enjoys his looks, his money and a steady stream of lovers. When his friend Pelayo introduces him to Sofía, César falls for her and takes her from Pelayo. His former lover Nuria, who was also at the party, reacts with jealousy, and the next day, while driving with César, she deliberately sends the car off the road. Nuria dies, and César survives with a face left badly disfigured. After the crash, his grip on reality begins to slip: he is committed to a psychiatric facility, where a psychiatrist tries to reconstruct what led him to commit a murder. César's account reveals deep confusion about his own identity and about Sofía, and he comes to suspect he is the target of an elaborate scheme.
Open Your Eyes is a Spanish-Italian-French co-production directed by Alejandro Amenábar, who wrote the screenplay with Mateo Gil. It followed his 1996 debut Thesis and preceded The Others, The Sea Inside and later films in his career. Eduardo Noriega plays César, with Penélope Cruz as Sofía, Fele Martínez as Pelayo, Najwa Nimri as Nuria, Chete Lera as Antonio and Gérard Barray as Duvernois.
Released in December 1997, the film runs 117 minutes and blends drama, science fiction and thriller. On IMDb it holds a score of 7.7 from around 77,000 votes; on TMDB it sits at 7.5 from roughly 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 45 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
