The British version of the film was cut, and it lacks the scene where the character played by Hower says the line, "Gasoline mixed with detergent..."
The film is based on the Japanese series "The Tale of Zatoichi."
For the role, Rutger Hauer took lessons in samurai sword fighting from Sho Kosugi, who also appeared in the film.
Rутger Hauer was taught swordsmanship and how to imitate the movements of a blind person by Lynn Manning, a budoka (a term for those who practice Japanese martial arts) who lost his sight at the age of 23.
Tim Matheson introduced screenwriter Charles Robert Carner to producer Daniel Grodnick. Matheson wanted to learn how to produce. Grodnick told him that if he found a script that Grodnick liked, they would produce the film together. A couple of weeks later, Matheson was already showing Grodnick Kimiyoshi Yasuda's action film “Sword of Zatoichi” (1967) for a potential remake. During the work on the film about the blind samurai in America, directors and film studios changed (two and three respectively), but after seven years and ten script rewrites, the film was ready.
Rutger Hauer and stunt coordinator Stephen Lambert began working on scenes and stunts for Hauer's role in this film three months before principal photography began. Training took place every day – and continued for all ten weeks of filming. Hauer would only begin shooting after a daily two-hour workout.
