Terror by Night is a Sherlock Holmes mystery set largely aboard a passenger train travelling from London to Edinburgh. Holmes and Dr. Watson are engaged to protect the Star of Rhodesia, a large and enormously valuable diamond owned by Lady Margaret Carstairs, after her son Roland grows concerned for its safety. Before the journey has gone far, Roland is murdered and the diamond disappears, leaving Holmes, Watson and Inspector Lestrade to work out which of the people in their carriage is responsible.
The film was directed by Roy William Neill, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Frank Gruber. It is one of a run of Sherlock Holmes films Neill made, following Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, Sherlock Holmes in Washington, The House of Fear, The Woman in Green and Dressed to Kill, and preceding Black Angel. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce return as Holmes and Watson, with Dennis Hoey as Lestrade and Alan Mowbray, Renee Godfrey and Frederick Worlock among the supporting players.
Released in 1946, the film runs sixty minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 7,600 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.6 from roughly 160 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from eight reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a reasonably well-regarded entry in the series rather than a sharply divisive one.
