What's left behind the scenes

  • Jet Li turned down a role in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) for this film. Chow Yun-Fat was cast in Jet's place.
  • Jet Li came up with the idea for the fight between Alia's character and the girl on a motorcycle during the motorcycle chase.
  • The film is set in California, but was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Only a few scenes were filmed in California.
  • The football scene was filmed on a cloudy day, but thanks to the use of backlighting and cameras set at a special angle, it appears to be sunny.
  • An alternate ending was filmed in which the main characters, played by Jet Li and Aaliyah, kiss. It was not well-received by audiences at previews, but according to Jet Li, such a finale seemed too romantic and therefore inappropriate after Chow's suicide, so the ending without the kiss was used.
