Shenandoah

Charlie Anderson is a widowed farmer raising a large family in Shenandoah, Virginia, during the American Civil War. He opposes slavery and refuses to support the Confederacy, but as a committed opponent of war he will not take the Union side either, and he works to keep his household out of the conflict. The fighting reaches the family anyway when his youngest son is taken prisoner by Northern troops, sending Charlie on a search for the boy that forces him to confront the war directly.

The 1965 film was directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, the second of the sixteen features he directed, following McLintock! and preceding The Way West. James Lee Barrett wrote the screenplay, Robert Arthur produced, and Universal Pictures released it. James Stewart leads the cast as Charlie, with Doug McClure, Glenn Corbett, Patrick Wayne, Rosemary Forsyth and Phillip Alford among the twenty-nine credited performers. It runs 105 minutes and mixes the war and Western genres.

The film took about 17 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from 166 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from six reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both sites.
