- The film is based on Gillian Flynn's novel 'Gone Girl' (2012).
- Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Emily Blunt, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Abby Cornish and Julianna Hough were considered for the role of Amy Dunne.
- This is the first feature film shot entirely in 6k resolution (6144 x 3160).
- Although the events of the film take place in North Carthage, Missouri, filming took place in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Casting for extras was held at the Rose Theatre at Southeast Missouri State University, which is also located in Cape Girardeau.
- Ben Affleck postponed work on his own film in order to work with David Fincher. Affleck said, "He's the only director I know who can do anyone's job better than the people doing it." Once on set, Affleck slightly adjusted the camera settings, betting a crew member that Fincher wouldn't notice. But when filming began, Fincher immediately asked – why does the image look a little dull?
- One scene in the film takes place in Missouri, in an abandoned shopping mall that has become a kind of Mecca for the homeless. These scenes were filmed in Los Angeles: exterior shots were taken near a closed Montgomery Ward store, and interior shots were filmed in the vast Hawthorne Mall.
- Ben Affleck's birthday coincides with the birthday of his character Nick – August 15th.
- Gillian Flynn, the author of the original novel, wrote several script ending variations to maintain the interest of readers and viewers, and to avoid spoilers.
- While preparing for filming, Ben Affleck tracked down several men who had been accused of and convicted of murdering their wives, and spoke with them. In particular, Affleck spoke with Scott Peterson, who is awaiting execution in a California prison.
- In one episode of the film, Nick compares Amy to Elizabeth Bennet – the main character of Jane Austen's novel 'Pride and Prejudice'. Rosamund Pike, who played the role of Amy, also played Elizabeth's sister – Jane Bennet in a 2005 production.
