L'Eclisse

Set in Rome, L'Eclisse follows Vittoria, a literary translator who ends her relationship with the writer Riccardo after the two have grown apart. Restless and searching for a stronger connection to the people around her, she drifts between her mother, who spends her days at the stock exchange, and friends she cannot quite confide in. At the exchange she meets Piero, a young and successful stockbroker whose energy and detachment stand in sharp contrast to her own unease. The two begin an affair, and the attraction between them gradually gives way to a growing sense of distance as their different ways of approaching life prove difficult to reconcile.

Michelangelo Antonioni directed and co-wrote the film with Tonino Guerra, and it is the sixth of the thirteen features he directed, arriving between La Notte and Red Desert. Monica Vitti plays Vittoria opposite Alain Delon as Piero, with Francisco Rabal as Riccardo, Lilla Brignone as Vittoria's mother, Rossana Rory as Anita and Mirella Ricciardi as Marta. The Italian-French production was handled by Cineriz, Interopa Film and Paris-Film Production, with Raymond and Robert Hakim producing.

The film runs 126 minutes and was released in April 1962. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from around 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from roughly 568 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3 from 30 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
