Set in New York during the 1930s, The Funeral centres on the Tempio family, an Italian-American crime clan gathering after the youngest brother, Johnny, is shot dead outside a cinema. While his coffin rests in the family home, his brothers Ray, the head of the family, and Chez, whose mental illness leaves him unpredictable, are bound by the family's code to avenge the killing. Ray fixes on a longtime enemy with a motive of his own, setting in motion a chain of events that turns against the Tempios themselves. As the vigil continues, those gathered look back on Johnny's life, and the pursuit of vengeance exposes the fractures within the family.
Abel Ferrara directed, working from a screenplay by Nicholas St. John, with Mary Kane producing. The film is the ninth of the seventeen features Ferrara has directed, following The Addiction and preceding New Rose Hotel. Christopher Walken plays Ray and Chris Penn plays Chez, with Isabella Rossellini as Clara Tempio, Annabella Sciorra as Jean, Vincent Gallo as Johnny and Benicio del Toro as Gaspare, among a credited cast of thirty-two.
Made for about 13 million dollars, it took roughly 1 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from 209 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.1 from 34 reviews, a spread that places it somewhat higher with reviewers than with general audiences.
