What's left behind the scenes
- On August 10, 2002, a fire broke out in one of the pavilions where filming was taking place. No one present on set was injured, and the damage from the fire was estimated at $350,000.
- The film was originally planned to be simply titled “Pirates of the Caribbean,” but later, in anticipation of a sequel, the second part was added to the title: “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
- This is the first film from Walt Disney Pictures to receive a rating (PG-13 – only those over the age of 13 are allowed to view it).
- The idea for the film arose under the impression of the same-named attraction at the famous Disneyland. The world premiere, naturally, took place at the same Disneyland on June 28, 2003. Notably, this was the first film premiere to be held there.
- Johnny Depp’s character, Jack Sparrow, frequently flashes his golden teeth in the film. However, few know that these teeth are not makeup at all, but actual dental implants. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer didn't like the abundance of gold in Johnny's mouth and asked that only a couple of teeth retain the golden sheen.
- Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski planned to shoot in a giant artificial pool that had previously been used for 'Titanic' and 'Pearl Harbor,' but the 'Master and Commander' crew worked faster and rented the pavilion for the same time that 'Pirates' filming was scheduled to take place.
- Many members of the filming crew suffered from seasickness.
- The "Jolly Roger" emblem (a skull and two crossed bones on a black background), used as a pirate flag on the "Black Pearl", was first conceived by the legendary pirate Jack Rackham. He also became famous for including two women in his crew – Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Incidentally, one of the film's heroines, Anamaria, is nothing more than a combination of the aforementioned pirate ladies.
- Johnny Depp's character's appearance, his clothing and makeup were specifically chosen to hide the actor's numerous tattoos. The “Jack Sparrow” tattoo in the film on the actor’s arm was not real, however, after the film's release, Johnny had an exact copy of this tattoo made in honor of his son, Jack.
- Depp modeled Jack Sparrow’s unforgettable behavior after one of his best friends, Keith Richards, deciding for some reason that pirates of the 18th century closely resembled rock stars.
- The idea for the film had been brewing with screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio for a long time, but producers initially rejected the proposal in the early 90s.
- Watch the end credits to the very end, as there is a short scene after them.
- After the film became a hit, the Walt Disney Company closed the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride in Disneyland parks in order to make some renovations. A storyline was added to the ride in which Captain Barbossa pursues Jack Sparrow.
- In Spanish, "Isla de Muerta" means "island of the dead," and "Tortuga" means "turtle."
- The scene in which Jack Sparrow stands on the mast of a sinking ship is a reference to Buster Keaton's painting "The Navigator" (1924).
- Jack Sparrow's famous phrase – "savvy?" – was improvised by Johnny Depp.
- One of the final lines of the film – "Bring me that horizon" – was improvised by Johnny Depp.
- Keira Knightley, just like Johnny Depp, wore contact lenses in the final scene of the film.
- When Will regains consciousness after the pirate attack, the same girl who played young Elizabeth (Lucinda Dryzek) can be seen in the background.
- The scene where Will and Jack walk underwater holding the boat above them is a reference to "The Crimson Pirate" (1952).

- Keira Knightley wore a wig because her hair was not long enough for the role of Elizabeth due to previous roles.
- Michael Keaton, Jim Carrey, and Christopher Walken were considered for the role of Jack Sparrow.
- Jude Law, Ewan McGregor, Tobey Maguire, Christopher Masterson, and Christian Bale were considered for the role of Will Turner.
- According to commentary on the DVD, Geoffrey Rush developed a theory that people look at the screen from left to right just as they read a book. Therefore, he tried to be on the left side of the screen as often as possible, especially in scenes with the monkey and Keira Knightley, because otherwise, he said, no one in the audience would notice him in those scenes.
