Mr. Jonathan, played by John Daniels, runs a hair salon on the Sunset Strip where his black female clients come for more than haircuts. The stylish, sexually active owner has built his business around affairs with the women who visit his shop. His life takes a different turn when Brenda St. John (Tanya Boyd), his new receptionist, brings trouble with her: a former employer, a Los Angeles crime boss named Mr. Wilson, played by Joseph Carlo, wants her back and is willing to use violence to get his way.
Greydon Clark directed Black Shampoo, released in March 1976. It was the first film he directed in a career that continued through Hi-Riders, Without Warning, The Return, Joysticks and The Forbidden Dance. Clark co-wrote the screenplay with Alvin L. Fast, who also produced the film through World Amusement Company. Alongside Daniels and Boyd, the cast includes Skip E. Lowe as Artie, Gary Allen as Richard and William Bonner as Maddox.
The film runs 82 minutes and mixes action, comedy, crime, drama and thriller elements. Its ratings are modest on both platforms where it is listed: 4.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,100 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of 25 votes.
