Robert L. Talbot, a wealthy New York businessman, spends every September at his villa on the Italian Riviera, where he looks forward to time with his Roman girlfriend, Lisa Fellini. When he arrives unannounced in July, he finds the house turned into a hotel by his manager, Maurice, who has been renting out the rooms during Talbot's long absences. The paying guests are a group of young American women under a chaperone, along with the boys who pursue them. Lisa, meanwhile, has grown tired of waiting for Talbot to marry her and has made other plans. Trying to regain control of his property and his private life, Talbot instead becomes an unwilling guardian to his tenants.
The comedy was directed by Robert Mulligan, the fourth of the nine features listed in his filmography, following The Great Impostor and preceding To Kill a Mockingbird. Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida head the cast, with Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Walter Slezak and Brenda De Banzie among the thirty-two credited performers. Stanley Shapiro and Maurice Richlin wrote the screenplay; Robert Arthur and Raoul Walsh produced. Released in August 1961, it took about 14 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a romantic comedy of its period. On IMDb it holds 6.9 from roughly 4,500 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from a much smaller pool of 85, indicating a modest but settled reputation among viewers.
