- The film's screenplay was written by actress Carrie Fisher, based on her own semi-autobiographical book.
- Meryl Streep performed all the songs herself.
- The finale features music by the Canadian rock band "Blue Rodeo," popular in Canada but relatively unknown in the US. The driver of Meryl Streep's limousine once played Blue Rodeo songs for her, after which the actress wanted to use the music.
- Gene Hackman created his character's image by imitating director Richard Donner.
- Scenes featuring John Cusack, who played one of Susanna's friends in the rehabilitation clinic, were cut.
- Shirley MacLaine is 15 years older than her on-screen daughter, Meryl Streep. In turn, actor Conrad Bain plays the father of MacLaine's character with an age difference of 11 years.
