Beat the Devil

Beat the Devil follows a group of swindlers who travel to Africa hoping to secure land they believe holds uranium. Among them are Billy Dannreuther and his wife Maria, who become entangled with an English couple, Harry and Gwendolen Chelm, while waiting in an Italian port for their boat to be repaired. Once at sea, the scheme runs into trouble, and the travellers end up in Arab captivity before events take a comic turn. The film, based on a novel, mixes adventure with crime and comedy.

John Huston directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Truman Capote. It was the seventh of the twenty-two films Huston directed, arriving between Moulin Rouge and Moby Dick. Humphrey Bogart plays Billy Dannreuther, with Jennifer Jones as Gwendolen Chelm, Gina Lollobrigida as Maria, Robert Morley as Peterson and Peter Lorre as Julius O'Hara. The production, mounted by Dear Film, Romulus Films, Santana Pictures and Rizzoli-Haggiag across the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States, had a budget of about one million dollars. A credited cast of twenty and crew of forty-five worked on the roughly ninety-five-minute film.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from fewer than two hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from nineteen reviews places it slightly higher than the audience scores on both platforms, though all three sit in similar territory.
