Short description

Set in a small American town on Halloween night, Trick 'r Treat weaves together several stories that unfold at the same time. A high school principal leads a secret life that contradicts his respectable public role. A young woman who has been saving herself for the right man thinks she may have finally met him. A married couple clashes over the holiday, since the husband embraces it and the wife does not. A cruel prank played by teenagers has consequences they did not anticipate. Watching over these events is Sam, a masked figure who appears when the rules of Halloween are broken.

The film was released in 2007 and runs 82 minutes. Michael Dougherty directed and wrote the screenplay, and it stands as the first feature he directed, preceding Krampus in 2015 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Bryan Singer produced, and the cast includes Brian Cox as Mr. Kreeg, Quinn Lord as Sam, Anna Paquin as Laurie, Dylan Baker as Steven, Leslie Bibb as Emma and Tahmoh Penikett as Henry, among 36 credited performers and 90 credited crew members. It was made for about 12 million dollars by Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures, Bad Hat Harry Productions and Little Sam Films, and was shot in Canada and the United States.

On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 across roughly 114,000 votes, while TMDB shows 7 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 2,140. A critics' score of 7.5 out of 10 from 38 reviews places it above the audience figure on IMDb and slightly above the TMDB average.

What's left behind the scenes

  • All the werewolves shown in the film were created at Tatopoulos Studios, which also created the lycans from the 'Underworld' film series.
  • The film was shot primarily at night, and the children collecting treats from neighbors were played by little people.
  • Almost all of the pumpkins carved into the shape of heads in the film were actually made of foam or ceramic. A joke circulated on set that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of the film.
