According to Scott Schwartz, the hardest part of working on the film was having Jackie Gleason (1916-1987) as a partner on set. Schwartz memorized his lines as he had been taught, while Gleason constantly improvised and would yell at Schwartz when he stumbled.
The estate ('Charbonnet House') was huge, but still not large enough to film some scenes, such as the toy car races. A scaled-up replica of the estate's interior was built in a nearby hangar in 6 weeks (it covered an entire acre). It included a staircase, a playroom, a corridor, two bathrooms, and three bedrooms.
