Let's Make Love

Jean-Marc Clement is a wealthy industrialist who discovers that a New York stage revue intends to mock him. He goes to the theatre to see for himself, is mistaken for a performer, and ends up cast as a caricature of himself. He keeps the deception going because of Amanda Dell, the show's leading lady, and sets about learning comedy, singing and dancing with help from Gene Kelly, Milton Berle and Bing Crosby, who appear as themselves. Amanda takes an interest in the man she believes is a struggling actor, though the truth about his identity cannot stay hidden forever. The film is a romantic comedy set in the world of the theatre, in which a man accustomed to controlling everything must make a fool of himself on stage.

George Cukor directed, working from a screenplay by Norman Krasna, with Jerry Wald producing. It was the fifteenth of the seventeen features Cukor directed, arriving between Les Girls and My Fair Lady. Marilyn Monroe plays Amanda, Yves Montand plays Clement, and Tony Randall, Frankie Vaughan, Wilfrid Hyde-White and David Burns appear in supporting roles among a credited cast of thirty-four.

Released in September 1960, the film runs just under two hours. Audience responses place it in middling territory, with a rating of 6.4 on IMDb from roughly 8,600 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller sample of 187. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 5.7 from fifteen reviews, so the film is remembered as a lesser entry in Cukor's filmography rather than one of his celebrated works.
