Desk Set is a 1957 comedy set in a Manhattan office building, where Bunny Watson runs the research department of a television network. Her small staff answers a wide range of questions using memory and a reference library, and the department is a point of pride for her. Richard Sumner, an efficiency expert and inventor, arrives to study whether a computer he has built could take over the department's work. The arrival of the machine unsettles Bunny and her colleagues, who see their jobs under threat, while the professional disagreement between the two becomes something more personal. The film was directed by Walter Lang, working from a screenplay by Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron, who also produced. It followed The King and I in Lang's filmography and came shortly before Can-Can. Spencer Tracy plays Sumner opposite Katharine Hepburn as Bunny, with Gig Young, Joan Blondell, Dina Merrill and Sue Randall among the supporting cast.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.2 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB it holds a 7 from roughly 135 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 24 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly comparable response across both groups.
