Demonlover follows Diane de Monx, an employee of a French multinational run by Henri-Pierre Volf that has acquired TokyoAnime, a Japanese studio producing three-dimensional pornographic animation. Two online media companies, Mangatronics and Demonlover, are competing for the exclusive internet distribution rights to this material. Diane is secretly working for Mangatronics, tasked with undermining the rival company from inside Volf's group, but she comes to realize that Demonlover has its own infiltrators positioned close to her, and that the contest over the rights involves espionage and violence.
Olivier Assayas directed and wrote the film, his third feature in a directing career of fifteen films, arriving between Irma Vep and Paris Je T'aime. Xavier Giannoli produced. Connie Nielsen plays Diane, with Charles Berling, Chloë Sevigny, Dominique Reymond, Gina Gershon and Jean-Baptiste Malartre among the principal cast. The production, made across Mexico, France and Japan, had a budget of 8 million USD. It runs 121 minutes and blends drama, mystery and thriller.
The response has been mixed. On IMDb, audiences rate it 5.8/10 from 131 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.7/10 from 85 reviews places professional assessment slightly below the audience figure, with both landing in similar middle territory.
