What's left behind the scenes

  • At the request of director and screenwriter Mike Leigh, actor Timothy Spall, who played William Turner (1775-1851), spent two years learning to paint before filming began.
  • A working model of the Planet locomotive, built in 1830 by Robert Stephenson and Company, was provided by the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. The locomotive was run on an old railway line in North Wales, laid from east to west. The filmmakers needed to capture the setting sun in the rear of the train – as Turner himself had painted it – and they had only one chance, as the locomotive was provided to them for just one day.
