What's left behind the scenes

  • Claire Danes was initially cast as the lead character, Amanda Pierce, but she left the project just before filming began. The role was given to Monica Potter, who was originally intended for a supporting role.
  • The role of Jim Winston was written specifically for Freddie Prinze Jr., who went on to play the part.
  • At the beginning of the film, Jim is given the chance to demonstrate his knife-throwing skills, but he misses the target. It only becomes clear later that he was actually aiming for a fly in mid-air, and he hit it. This scene is almost entirely borrowed from the action-comedy 'From China with Love' (Stephen Chow and Lee Lik-chi, 1994).
  • While working on the film, director Mark Waters drew inspiration from classics—the romantic comedies 'His Girl Friday' (Howard Hawks, 1939) and 'The Philadelphia Story' (George Cukor, 1940).
