Short description
Ugo Fantozzi is a mild-mannered accountant who faces constant misfortune in his professional and personal life. He endures a difficult existence characterized by a lack of recognition from his bosses, indifference from his colleagues, and a strained home life with his wife and daughter. Despite his efforts to navigate the challenges of city transit and office politics, he remains a servant to his superiors and harbors an unrequited love for a secretary named Signorina Silvani.
Directed by Luciano Salce, this 1975 Italian comedy is the fifth film in the director's chronological body of work, appearing after Medicine Italian Style and before The Second Tragic Fantozzi. The screenplay was written by Leonardo Benvenuti, Paolo Villaggio, and Salce. Paolo Villaggio stars in the title role, supported by a cast that includes Anna Mazzamauro, Gigi Reder, Giuseppe Anatrelli, Umberto D'Orsi, and Liù Bosisio. The production featured 68 credited cast members and 55 crew members.

What's left behind the scenes
- The filmmakers spent a long time looking for a way to portray Mariangela’s appearance as ugly as she was described in the book. For this reason, Fantozzi's daughter was actually played by a short actor with a prosthetic nose.
- The character of Geometer Fillini, as performed by Gigi Reder, is a parody of the Italian film director Federico Fellini. This is indicated both by the similarity of the surnames and the hero's appearance.
- The character Fantozzi is so popular in Italy that the word “fantocciano” has entered common usage, meaning something or someone as unlucky as Fantozzi.
- Although the Fantozzi surname is considered to be from Northern Italy, it is actually of Sicilian origin. The film, however, was based on a Northern Italian family and shot in Northern Italy, thereby reinforcing the common belief that the surname has Northern Italian roots. The original version of this surname was Fantoccino, and it all stemmed from it being used in a shortened form just once.
