Hawk the Slayer

Hawk the Slayer is a British fantasy adventure about two brothers locked in a bitter conflict. Voltan, who is cruel and power-hungry, has killed his own father and Hawk's bride, leaving Hawk to seek revenge and to live up to the title he has inherited. Armed with a magical sword, Hawk gathers a small band of warriors to stand against his brother, among them a giant, a dwarf, an elf, and a one-armed crossbowman. Their struggle for the land is complicated when Voltan takes a nun hostage and demands a ransom.

The film was released in August 1980 and runs ninety-three minutes. It was directed by Terry Marcel, who wrote the screenplay with Harry Robertson; Robertson also produced. It is the first of the two films Marcel directed, ahead of Bejewelled in 1991. The cast is led by Jack Palance as Voltan and John Terry as Hawk, with Bernard Bresslaw as the giant Gort, Ray Charleson as the elf Crow, Peter O'Farrell as the dwarf Baldin, and William Morgan Sheppard as Ranulf, across a credited cast of thirty-seven.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb the film holds 5.3 out of 10 from around 4,600 votes, and on TMDB it has 4.8 out of 10 from far fewer votes.
