Stranded in Egypt with no money to get home, Bud and Lou take what looks like an easy job from an archaeologist: guarding a mummy that is being shipped to the United States. The plan falls apart when the mummy vanishes and the men who hired them turn up dead. Two competing groups want the same prize, a medallion buried with the mummy that is said to lead to a treasure, and Lou ends up swallowing it. That leaves the pair being chased through Egypt by a cult determined to protect its princess's tomb, a gang of thieves led by the smooth Madame Rontru, and the mummy itself.
The film was released in 1955 and runs 79 minutes. Charles Lamont directed it from a screenplay by John Grant, with Howard Christie producing for Universal Pictures. It was Lamont's fifth film with the comedy duo, following Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Invisible Man in 1951 and Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1953. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play versions of themselves, as they did throughout the series, and Marie Windsor, Michael Ansara, Dan Seymour and Richard Deacon appear in supporting roles; 44 cast members are credited.
Audience response has been mild but enduring. On IMDb it holds a 6.2 rating from around 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from a much smaller pool of 126 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 from 12 reviews places it below what viewers gave it.
