Short description

No Mercy is a 1986 crime thriller about a Chicago police officer, Eddie Jillette, whose partner is killed while the two are mixed up with a hired killing tied to a New Orleans crime boss. Jillette pursues the man responsible for his partner's death, and his search brings him into contact with Michel Duval, the woman connected to the killer and the only witness to what happened. The two end up on the run together, moving through the Louisiana bayous while the gangsters close in, and a relationship develops between them as the pursuit continues. Richard Gere plays Jillette and Kim Basinger plays Michel, with Jeroen Krabbé as the crime boss Losado, George Dzundza, Gary Basaraba and William Atherton among the supporting cast.

Richard Pearce directed the film, working from a screenplay by James Carabatsos, with D. Constantine Conte producing. It was Pearce's third feature, arriving between Country and The Long Walk Home. Made for a budget of 14 million dollars, the film took in roughly 12 million dollars worldwide, falling short of its cost.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from about 9,300 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 from just over 200 votes, a modest level of audience approval. A critics' rating of 4.2 from 16 reviews places it below those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When director Richard Pearce went to Chicago to finalize the filming locations, he was accompanied by Richard Gere, the actor playing the role of Eddie. He prepared for the role of Eddie by spending time with Chicago undercover police officers.
  • The once-famous – and long-gone – Chicago stockyards were recreated by a set decoration team led by Patricia von Brandenstein. The same team created a railroad crossing to which thirty head of cattle were later delivered for filming.
