The film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival was accompanied by a loud scandal – many considered '9 Songs' to be outright pornography.
Margo Still did not want her name to appear in the film's credits and asked the director to replace it with the name of her character – Lisa.
This is the first British film with strong sexual content to be recognized as part of the mainstream, rather than a specialized, film circuit.
It is also the first film bordering on pornography to be released legally in Irish cinemas.
