What's left behind the scenes

  • The working title of the film was “The Last of the Independents.” Director Don Siegel wanted to keep the title, but as a result, the phrase became the film’s slogan. Furthermore, the same phrase serves as the motto of Walter Matthau’s company in the film.
  • The old trailer, which served as the protagonist’s home, was located near the home of the famous artist Effron Frederick, who allowed the filmmakers to shoot it. Her husband, Cliff Frederick, helped guard Charlie’s trailer at night, as the roof had been removed and cameras and lights were installed there.
