- The role of Julian was initially offered to John Travolta, but after he refused, it went to Richard Gere. Upon learning that Travolta would not be involved in the project, actress Julie Christie refused to play Michelle Stratton, and she was replaced by Lauren Hutton.
- Christopher Reeve declined an offer to star in the film, along with a substantial million-dollar fee for the time.
- The main female role was offered to Meryl Streep, but the already well-known actress refused, considering the overall tone of the material unsuitable.
- Ferdinando Scarfiotti was the production designer of the film from beginning to end. However, according to the strict rules of the Art Directors Guild, he was not eligible for membership at that time. Because of this, he is credited as a visual consultant in the film's credits.
