What's left behind the scenes

  • Of everyone who appeared in the film, only Chris Pedersen and Bill Coen were professional actors.
  • The child actors performed the stunts themselves.
  • Filming took 6 weeks.
  • The scene where Razzle shoots the cockroach cost $50 and was the most expensive in the film. The cockroach was specially trained and had its own trainer.
  • When the kids are driving in the car, Jack says “Flea,” referring to Razzle. Razzle is played by Michael “Flea” Balzari, the bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers.
  • The location of the “outcasts’” settlement was slated for demolition to make way for a highway, but the highway couldn’t be completed for almost 15 years. The expressway that eventually appeared there was featured in Jan de Bont’s action film “Speed” (1994).
  • To enhance the realism, Penelope Spheeris cast real teenagers from the street and punks.
  • Many of the cases depicted in the film are based on real-life events that the screenwriter and director, Penelope Spheeris, learned about from local newspapers.
