The Curse of the Werewolf

A child is born in eighteenth-century Spain to a mute servant girl, and though he is raised with care by adoptive parents who try to give him a normal life, a curse runs in his blood. As he grows into a young man, the full moon brings on a transformation he cannot control, turning him into a beast that kills. His love for a woman named Cristina seems to hold the violence in check, until a break in their engagement sets off a tragic chain of events.

The Curse of the Werewolf was directed by Terence Fisher for Hammer Film Productions and Universal Pictures. It is the eighth of the sixteen films he directed in chronological order, coming between The Brides of Dracula and The Phantom of the Opera. Anthony Hinds wrote and produced. Clifford Evans plays the adoptive father, Don Alfredo Corledo, with Oliver Reed as the grown Leon, Yvonne Romain as the servant girl, Catherine Feller as Cristina, and Anthony Dawson and Josephine Llewellyn as the Marques Siniestro and his wife. Fifty-two performers are credited.

The film runs 93 minutes. It holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 7,900 votes and the same figure on TMDB from a much smaller sample of 186 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from five reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
